Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to elementize a word?

To elementize a word means to break it into a left-to-right sequence of real chemical element symbols. For example, the word “carbon” elementizes as C + Ar + B + O + N (Carbon, Argon, Boron, Oxygen, Nitrogen). Some words have multiple valid element splits; others cannot be elementized at all because the periodic table's 118 symbols don't tile the letters in order.

Carbonat works as an elementize dictionary: type any word on the home page and instantly see every valid split. The statistics page shows how often words can be elementized across seven languages, and the names browser pre-indexes thousands of elementizable first names and surnames.

What is a periodic table speller?

A periodic table speller is a tool that takes any text and checks whether it can be spelled using chemical element symbols from the periodic table. Carbonat is a free periodic table speller that finds all valid element splits — not just the first match — for words, names, and phrases in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, and Welsh.

Once you find a spelling you like, you can continue into the designer to customize the layout and order it on a t-shirt, poster, or other print product. You can also explore the interactive periodic table to see all 118 element symbols that the speller draws from.

Can I print via Printify or another service myself?

Yes — we fulfill through professional print partners. If you prefer, you can download your design and place an order directly with a service like Printify or any local printer. This can sometimes be cheaper and lets you choose different products. If you are still exploring ideas, you can browse names spelled with chemical elements or build a custom layout in the Designer.

  • How: Use the Designer to create your design, then use the Download action to save a high‑quality PNG. You can upload that file to your chosen print provider.
  • Specs: Aim for 300 DPI at the provider’s recommended pixel size. Keep important content inside safe margins and allow for bleed per their guidelines.
  • Support: External/third‑party orders aren’t covered by our support or replacement policy.
  • License: Downloads are for personal use by default. For commercial use, please contact us.

Can I spell my name with chemical elements?

Many first names and surnames can be written with real periodic symbols, but not every spelling will work. Use our names spelled with chemical elements page to search for matches, or explore the periodic table to see which symbols are available. If you want the data angle, we also publish a language-by-language analysis of elementizable names.

Can I create words, sentences, or poems with element symbols?

Yes. The simplest flow is to start with a single word or a name on the home page, but the app also supports longer text and ships curated sentence and poem examples. We publish data-backed articles on each topic: words, sentences, and poems, covering what works well, what fails quickly, and how to move the result into the designer.
